IRONMAN Leeds.
Your best day in Leeds.

Leeds is not a flat city-centre IRONMAN. It begins in Roundhay Park, reaches into Yorkshire roads through Shadwell and Harewood, and returns athletes to a park marathon. Those bike rises need patience long before the finish feels close.

What could you race?

I’m Tom, the coach behind Sense Endurance Coaching. Tell me where you are now and I’ll show you what a strong day in Leeds could look like.

Let’s build your race

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Change units

Yorkshire climbing doesn't care how fast you swam Waterloo Lake.

Leeds sends a full-distance race out of Roundhay Park and onto Yorkshire roads with a lot more character than a flat city ride. The earlier bike passed Shadwell, Thorner, Harewood and Eccup. Those repeated changes in gradient matter more to your marathon than the first hour's speed. The 2027 route remains unconfirmed.

Waterloo Lake, previous full swim setting

Keep 3.8 km measured in the park water

Two loops of Waterloo Lake, with an in-water turn between them, put a full lakeside crowd on every stroke. Settle into your own rhythm rather than the noise's pace.

Settle by 400 m. Use the in-water turn as a genuine reset.

Roundhay Park swim exit and T1

Begin the long bike without a surge

After the opening ride to Shadwell, Black Hill Road brings three distinct summits into the day. This is the single easiest place to overspend on a course you'll ride two more times.

Cap power on each summit. Fuel on the descents.

Shadwell, previous early bike route

Put a ceiling on Yorkshire climbing efforts

The second 55 km loop retraces the same villages and the same Black Hill Road summits. Match your effort to lap one rather than reacting to how fresh the legs feel.

Compare effort to lap one. Keep drinking through the exposed sections.

Thorner, previous full-bike corridor

Keep food intake steady over the rolling road

The final loop returns to the Yorkshire climbs when your legs have already worked twice over. The 2,574 metres of climbing applies to the whole bike course, not this single lap. Hold the same power ceiling all the way back to Roundhay Park.

Hold the same climbing number as loops one and two. Finish planned nutrition before T2.

Harewood and Eccup, later cycling roads

Respect changes in terrain without chasing speed

A short climb out of transition and a loop of the picturesque Upper Lake open the run. Use it to settle rather than racing off a demanding bike.

Shorten stride on the opening climb. Let the Upper Lake loop feel controlled.

Return to Roundhay, full bike finish

Leave a working running stride at T2

The main loop moves through the West Side of the park and the residential streets of Roundhay, lined with spectator support. Hold a genuinely easy pace on this first full loop.

Check effort against your opening cap. Use every aid station.

Roundhay Park, marathon opening

Begin the first circuit deliberately easy

Passing the same undulating streets a second time gives a clear read on how loop one's pace is holding. Adjust deliberately here rather than on the final loop.

Compare loop two to loop one. Keep fuelling on schedule.

Roundhay park roads, marathon middle

Keep cooling, food and cadence consistent

The third loop is where a genuinely hilly bike course starts to show up in the legs. Manage effort rather than chasing a pace that's slipping.

Reassess goal pace honestly. Keep taking aid on schedule.

Cricket pavilion finish precinct, previous layout

Spend the late effort only when you can hold it

The final loop finishes under the iconic IRONMAN Leeds finish arch, with live music and DJs creating a party atmosphere. If the day went to plan, this is where it pays off.

Decide the finish honestly. Save something for the red carpet.

What to check in race week

Confirm the 2027 full race date and actual Waterloo Lake swim, Yorkshire bike roads and park marathon. The previous maps cover different editions, so check Roundhay transitions, climbs, access, aid and cutoffs rather than stringing old turns together.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: steady long-course nutrition and strict limits on repeated Yorkshire hills create the possibility of a genuinely controlled Roundhay marathon.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Leeds.
