IRONMAN Wales.
Race Tenby on your terms.

Tenby is honest about what it asks. The sea can be demanding, Pembrokeshire roads are hilly, and the marathon returns you again and again to a town that knows how to cheer. There is nowhere to hide an overambitious bike.

What could you race?

I’m Tom, the coach behind Sense Endurance Coaching. Tell me where you are now and I’ll show you what a strong day in Tenby could look like.

Let’s build your race

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Change units

The people of Tenby can help you finish. They can't undo the hills.

North Beach gives you open sea before the long run up the zig-zag ramp to transition. After that, the Pembrokeshire roads keep asking for one more climb, and Tenby's walls and seafront draw you back into a town that can make a difficult marathon feel special. This is the earlier course layout; the September 2027 route and date still need confirmation.

Tenby North Beach, previous full swim start

Save something for the zig-zag ramp

Two loops of open sea off the famous North Beach lead into a genuinely long 1 km run up the 'zig zag' ramp to transition. Settle into rhythm early and don't empty the tank before that run even starts.

Settle by 400 m. Save legs for the zig zag ramp.

Pembrokeshire, opening bike loop

Ride the first rollers as if you have to repeat them

The course moves through the genuinely undulating Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, past castles and landmarks easy to get distracted by. This lap repeats, so ride the rollers at a number you can hold twice.

Cap power on every roller. Fuel on the flatter stretches between them.

Pembrokeshire, closing bike loop one

Finish the first lap without chasing time

As loop one closes, hold the same effort you plan for lap two rather than easing up early because the terrain briefly settles.

Stay on the fuelling schedule. Keep power consistent through the closing kilometres.

Pembrokeshire, second bike loop

Make the second pass as deliberate as the first

The second loop repeats the same rolling coastal terrain. Ride to the same power ceiling you set on lap one, especially on the rollers that felt manageable the first time.

Compare effort to lap one. Finish planned nutrition before T2.

Tenby's walls, opening marathon lap

Let the first loop be calmer than the crowd

The walls and seafront give Tenby a finish-line atmosphere long before you reach the finish. Enjoy it, but keep your first loop deliberately easier than the crowd wants.

Shorten stride out of T2. Hold opening pace regardless of the noise.

Tenby seafront, marathon lap two

Find out whether your opening pace is still yours

Passing the same walls and beachfront a second time gives a clear read on how loop one's pace is holding after a rolling bike course. Adjust deliberately here.

Compare loop two to loop one. Keep fuelling on schedule.

Tenby's streets, marathon lap three

Protect rhythm rather than fighting the clock

The third loop is where genuinely undulating bike terrain, ridden twice, starts to show up in the legs. Manage effort rather than chasing a pace that's slipping.

Reassess goal pace honestly. Keep taking aid on schedule.

Tenby's walls, final marathon loop

Let the town lift you when you have earned it

By the final loop, Tenby's walls and crowds will feel different from the first pass. If you have kept the bike and early run in check, this is the moment to take what is left.

Decide the finish honestly. Save something for the final loop's crowd.

What to check in race week

Check the confirmed 2027 race date and course before memorising specific turns. On race week, pay attention to sea conditions at North Beach, the long exit to transition, road closures and where you can eat and drink between climbs. Don't let the crowds decide your opening marathon pace.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: confidence in open sea, climbing power you can repeat and the patience to run four town laps after a genuinely demanding bike.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Tenby.
