IRONMAN Canada-Ottawa.
Your best day in Ottawa.

Ottawa opens with 3.8 km in the river at Britannia Park. The bike is long, the roads are closed, and the final marathon must still be run. A fast start on an empty road is not the same thing as a strong finish.

What could you race?

I’m Tom, the coach behind Sense Endurance Coaching. Tell me where you are now and I’ll show you what a strong day in Ottawa could look like.

Let’s build your race

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Change units

Closed roads make racing simpler. They don't make it shorter.

The 2027 race is confirmed locally with an Ottawa River swim at Britannia Park, 180 km on closed regional roads and a city marathon. The Rideau Canal area appears in earlier layouts; check the final 2027 turns before using a particular road as a pacing marker.

Britannia Park, Ottawa River

Find an economical rhythm in the river

The river swim starts from Britannia Park, reached by shuttle from downtown in the dark. After a broken morning, the priority is getting into a rhythm rather than racing the first few hundred metres.

Settle by 400 m. Swim your own effort off the start.

Ottawa closed cycling roads, early stage

Choose the effort you'll still want after hours

The course runs fully closed past Parliament Hill, the Supreme Court and the river. Smooth, traffic-free road at speed is where a slightly high number feels completely sustainable. Fix the ceiling here.

Cap power in the first 30 minutes. Start fuelling early.

Ottawa full-distance bike, middle stage

Treat regular eating as part of pacing

The route leaves the landmarks for quieter open landscape. Each rise may be mild on its own, but it comes back to test your pacing over three passes.

Hold power over the rises. Compare loop two to loop one.

Ottawa closed-road bike, final section

Return with a marathon available

This is a 2.75-loop course, so the last pass is a partial one and does not finish where the others did. Know that in advance rather than discovering it at 150 km when you expected to be nearly home.

Ride to distance, not to landmarks. Finish nutrition before T2.

Ottawa city run, opening kilometres

Let the legs settle before chasing pace

The marathon is flat through a busy downtown with heavy support. Nothing in the terrain will slow you down, so the first few kilometres have to be a decision.

Hold opening pace for 5 km. Shorten stride out of T2.

Ottawa city run, middle kilometres

Judge the marathon by what is left, not what is lost

On a flat course, the halfway point gives an honest read on whether the closed-road bike was ridden sensibly. Adjust here rather than at 35 km.

Reassess pace honestly at halfway. Take aid on schedule.

Ottawa finish area, late marathon

Use the remaining strength without forcing it

The finish is at Major's Hill Park beside the Château Laurier and the Parliament of Canada. On flat ground, whatever the bike did not take is still available here.

Decide the finish honestly. Run the last kilometres on effort.

What to check in race week

The 2027 sanctioned listing describes two swim loops, while an older IRONMAN guide showed one. Confirm the final buoy map, river conditions and shuttles before race week. Check bike-road closures, aid, transition bags and marathon turns before committing to landmark-specific pacing.

Make your finish prediction and I can send this plan to you in race week.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: the athlete can swim the river economically, ride steadily for hours on closed roads and begin a full marathon patiently.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Ottawa.
