IRONMAN Chattanooga.
Your best day in Chattanooga.

Chattanooga's full-distance bike is longer than the standard IRONMAN ride. The 2026 host described 116 miles, four beyond the familiar 112. That isn't trivia when you're budgeting nutrition and a marathon after the Tennessee River swim.

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Change units

Four extra miles need four miles of patience, not four miles of panic.

The 2026 race swam downstream in the Tennessee River, followed a 116-mile bike along US-27 and finished with a marathon through Chattanooga neighbourhoods and the Riverwalk to Ross's Landing. Older organiser accounts mention North Georgia roads instead. IRONMAN has confirmed 26 September 2027 for the next edition, but not yet its course.

Tennessee River, full downstream swim

Use the current to save energy rather than racing it

The swim runs with the current for all but the final stretch between the red turn buoy and Ross's Landing. Your split will look fast. That is the river, so take the free time and keep your effort honest.

Swim to effort, ignore the split. Expect the last stretch to feel suddenly harder.

Chattanooga swim exit, early transition

Treat the fast water time as nothing more than a split

The course leaves transition on Riverfront Parkway and heads out to US-27 before the loops begin. Use this section to settle on the power number you intend to hold for the whole ride, not the one the swim split just talked you into.

Cap power in the first 30 minutes. Start fuelling early.

US-27 corridor, reported 2026 bike opening

Set a power ceiling that lasts 116 miles

The same rolling terrain returns three times. Riding over each rise rather than through it is what leaves a marathon intact.

Hold power on every rise. Compare each loop to the last.

Long Chattanooga cycling middle

Keep nutrition regular through the extra bike length

By the third time on the same road you know exactly what the terrain does. Hold the ceiling here and ride back into Chattanooga with the marathon still in mind.

Match loop three to loop one. Finish planned nutrition before T2.

Bike route final sector, map conflict unresolved

Avoid final surges before the run

The run heads straight into downtown Chattanooga and onto the Riverwalk, with spectators the whole way. The course is rolling rather than flat, so let the opening kilometres feel genuinely easy.

Shorten stride out of T2. Hold opening pace through the noise.

Chattanooga marathon, opening neighbourhoods

Let the legs settle after an unusually long bike

The loop crosses Veterans Bridge and takes in the North Shore. The climbs are short, but you meet them twice, and the second crossing is the one that counts.

Keep effort even over the bridge. Take aid on schedule.

Chattanooga Riverwalk, later marathon

Hold form instead of defending the clock

Starting the same loop again gives you a clean comparison. If loop two is already slipping badly against loop one, the bike was ridden too hard, and the response is to manage the fade rather than fight it.

Compare loop two to loop one. Adjust deliberately, not desperately.

Ross's Landing, historic finish

Use the saved strength for the final riverside streets

The last stretch comes down Riverfront Parkway to the finish at Ross's Landing, where the day started in transition. If the bike ceiling held across three loops, this is where that shows.

Decide the finish honestly. Run the last kilometres on effort.

What to check in race week

The 2026 full race used 144.6 miles in total, including 116 miles on the bike. This prediction uses that longer bike distance, not the standard 112 miles. Check the 2027 athlete guide for the bike distance and course layout before relying on them.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: athletes recognise that a downstream swim does not make up for a 116-mile bike, and they train and fuel for that actual distance before a marathon.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Chattanooga.
