Challenge Xiamen.
Your best day in Xiamen.

Xiamen's coastline makes going fast look uncomplicated. You leave Meifeng beach, ride the coastal road three times and run beside the sea four more. The danger is believing a quick first lap tells you anything about the finish.

What could you race?

I’m Tom, the coach behind Sense Endurance Coaching. Tell me where you are now and I’ll show you what a strong day in Xiamen could look like.

Let’s build your race

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Change units

A quick coastal circuit is not a licence to spend everything.

This is an ocean swim followed by a relatively flat, repeated bike and run. With little sustained climbing, the course rewards a steady effort, but exposure and turns can still change the speed you see. Three bike laps should build one controlled ride, not three small time trials.

Meifeng Sports Park beach

Let the sea set the sighting, not the pace

Off Meifeng beach, the first lap is for sorting out your sighting and breathing. Take the same rhythm back into the sea on lap two, even if other athletes have decided to make the exit a race.

Settle by 300 m. Carry the same rhythm into loop 2.

Xiamen coastal track, first bike lap

Find your effort before the road feels fast

The coastal track will look and feel great on a fresh lap 1. Set your planned effort here and treat it as the standard for laps 2 and 3.

Check effort before average speed. Start fuelling early.

Xiamen coastal track, final bike laps

Keep the work steady when the wind shifts

By lap three, the coast will be familiar and the early excitement should be gone. Keep drinking and make your effort as repeatable as the view.

Compare each lap's effort to lap 1. Finish your nutrition before T2.

Coastal running path, early laps

Make room for a proper half marathon

The purpose-built coastal path gives consistent footing across all four laps. Use the first two to find a pace you can actually hold, not test a fast one.

Shorten your stride out of T2. Take every aid station on every lap.

Coastal running path, closing laps

Lift the effort only when the legs agree

Four run laps invite you to make four separate plans. Don't. Find an effort you can carry through the first half, then decide how much of the final coastal stretch you can actually race.

Compare the back half to the front honestly. Keep the finish decision yours.

What to check in race week

For the Meifeng beach start, check the sea conditions, wetsuit ruling and two-lap buoy line. Know the passing rules and turns on the three bike circuits, then work out where you will drink on each of the four coastal run laps. The weather forecast, not the postcard coastline, gets the last word.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: comfortable sea sighting, a repeatable three-lap bike effort and a restrained opening run feel like parts of the same performance rather than separate opportunities to gain time.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Xiamen.
