IRONMAN Western Australia.
Your best day in Busselton.

Busselton may be one of the easiest-looking places to ride 180 kilometres. That makes it no easier to run a marathon afterwards. The roads give you few natural rests; you must choose them for yourself.

What could you race?

I’m Tom, the coach behind Sense Endurance Coaching. Tell me where you are now and I’ll show you what a strong day in Busselton could look like.

Let’s build your race

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Change units

The flat kilometres are where the marathon gets decided.

The City of Busselton places the full IRONMAN at Geographe Bay and Busselton Foreshore on 6 December 2026, with largely flat cycling and running. The 70.3 event shares the weekend, not the same distance-specific course. Flat terrain rewards control only if you actually practise it.

Geographe Bay, full swim

Find a patient long-course rhythm

Staying close to shore in Geographe Bay keeps this swim sheltered from the weather. Exit briefly between the two laps and re-enter smoothly rather than letting the interruption break your rhythm.

Settle by 400 m. Use the beach interval to reset, not to rest.

Bay swim, approach to shore

Keep navigation and breathing composed

Heading out along the coast before entering the Tuart Forest, the flat terrain offers no natural check on effort. Set the power number you can hold for two full loops.

Cap power in the first 30 minutes. Fuel early while the terrain is easy.

Busselton full bike, early section

Set the modest power you can sustain for hours

As the first loop closes, hold the discipline you'll need for an identical second loop rather than easing up because it's felt manageable so far.

Stay on the fuelling schedule. Keep power consistent through the closing kilometres.

Busselton bike, first long middle section

Keep drinking even while the speed comes easily

The second loop repeats the same flat coast and forest terrain. Ride to the same power ceiling, especially through the sections that felt easy the first time.

Compare effort to loop one. Finish planned nutrition before T2.

Busselton bike, later middle section

Treat constant flat pedalling as work that accumulates

The run passes the iconic Busselton Jetty and the redeveloped Foreshore on the first of four loops. Nothing here should feel hard yet.

Shorten stride out of T2. Hold opening pace regardless of how good it feels.

Busselton bike, final kilometres

Prepare a working running stride before T2

Passing the same jetty and Foreshore views a second time gives a clear read on how loop one's pace is actually holding.

Compare loop two to loop one. Keep aid-station fuelling on schedule.

Busselton Foreshore, marathon opening

Make the first run kilometres genuinely comfortable

This is where a hard-ridden bike, even on a flat course, starts to show up in the legs. Manage the effort you actually have.

Reassess goal pace honestly. Keep taking aid on schedule.

Busselton Foreshore, marathon finish

Keep form and fuelling going long after the novelty fades

The final loop finishes among Busselton's crowds by the jetty. If both bike loops and the first three run loops were paced evenly, this is where it pays off.

Decide the finish honestly. Save something for the final loop.

What to check in race week

Check the full-distance swim in Geographe Bay, 180 km bike loops and foreshore marathon before travelling. The shorter Western Australia 70.3 has its own course: don't borrow its lap counts or transition details. Confirm aid, water and wind conditions for the long race.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: long stretches of uninterrupted pedalling and consistent marathon fuelling feel familiar before race day, without hiding behind an easy flat-course label.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Busselton.
