IRONMAN New Zealand.
Race Taupō on your terms.

Taupō is a place where athletes know what a full IRONMAN asks. A lake swim and rolling countryside only start the work; the marathon beside the water is where the patient athlete gets to use all that preparation.

What could you race?

I’m Tom, the coach behind Sense Endurance Coaching. Tell me where you are now and I’ll show you what a strong day in Taupō could look like.

Let’s build your race

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Change units

A full day in Taupō rewards a quiet first hour.

Lake Taupō gives the full race a calm-looking start, but the rolling countryside will still require 180 kilometres of consistent effort. The lakefront marathon is long enough to make every extra surge on the bike look unnecessary. The final 2027 course is still to be mapped.

Lake Taupō, opening full swim

Find your endurance stroke rather than your sprint

A deep-water mass start on the largest freshwater lake in Oceania means real contact in the opening minutes. Protect your position, then settle into the parallel-to-shore rhythm.

Protect space in the first 300 m. Settle into rhythm once clear.

Lake Taupō, later swim section

Leave water with the bike and run in mind

Leaving Kaimanawa Reserve via Rifle Range and Broadlands Roads, this opening stretch is rolling but not yet the course's defining feature. Settle your effort before the descent ahead.

Cap power on the early rollers. Start fuelling before the dam section.

Taupō countryside, early full bike

Begin below any power you cannot sustain for hours

The descent to the scenic Aratiatia Dam is fast and easy to overcook; the climb back out is where an uncontrolled descent gets paid for. Ride the descent under control and hold your power ceiling on the climb.

Brake early into the descent, not late. Hold your power number on the climb out.

Taupō rolling roads, first long block

Respect every rise without fighting the gradient

State Highway 5, the Homestead Road dogleg and Halcrow and Vaile Roads bring you back toward Broadlands Road. Hold the same discipline you'll need for an identical second loop.

Stay on the fuelling schedule. Keep power consistent through the return leg.

Taupō countryside, second long block

Keep nutrition consistent through the changing road

The second loop repeats the exact same terrain, including the Aratiatia Dam descent and climb. Match your effort to loop one, especially on the one section that actually tests you.

Compare the second dam climb to the first. Finish nutrition before T2.

Taupō bike return, pre-T2

Arrive ready to move rather than barely survive

The run leads through town and out along the lakefront pathway. After two loops that included real climbing, let the first run loop feel deliberately conservative.

Shorten stride out of T2. Hold opening pace regardless of the crowd.

Taupō lakefront, opening marathon

Use the first kilometres to find comfortable legs

The out-and-back to the 2 Mile Bay turnaround, then back via Lake Terrace, gives a clear read on pacing. Compare each loop honestly.

Reassess pace at the turnaround. Keep taking aid on schedule.

Taupō marathon, middle stretch

Keep running by attention, intake and effort

This is where the cumulative cost of two dam climbs on the bike starts to show up. Manage the effort you actually have.

Reassess goal pace honestly. Keep taking aid on schedule.

Taupō lakefront, finish approach

Let the end belong to the athlete you protected all day

The finish through Taupo's crowds rewards a bike that respected the dam both times and a run paced across all four loops.

Decide the finish honestly. Save something for the finish crowds.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: a full-distance swim, controlled rolling bike and genuinely restrained first hour of marathon running have all been rehearsed together.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Taupō.
