IRONMAN Valdivia.
Race Valdivia on your terms.

The full IRONMAN in Valdivia takes the river start much further than its accompanying 70.3. You'll leave the Calle-Calle behind for the roads near Mariquina and Máfil, then return for an entire marathon in the city. This is the version of Valdivia that requires patience measured in hours.

What could you race?

I’m Tom, the coach behind Sense Endurance Coaching. Tell me where you are now and I’ll show you what a strong day in Valdivia could look like.

Let’s build your race

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Change units

A river start is no shortcut to a full-distance finish.

The 2026 full race is described as a Calle-Calle swim from the Collico area, regional riding towards San José de la Mariquina and Máfil, and a marathon through historic Valdivia. It shares a weekend with a half-distance race, not its route. Even a helpful river current cannot make the 180 km ride or marathon any shorter.

Calle-Calle River, Collico area

Begin the long day without forcing the swim

Average water temperature around 14C is cold enough to affect breathing in the first minutes. The current is minimal at start time and wetsuits are mandatory, so navigation is simple; managing the cold is the real task.

Expect the first two minutes to feel difficult. Settle breathing before settling pace.

Roads towards Mariquina

Set the bike effort low enough for a marathon

Past Tres Marías airfield and the quiet town of Cabo Blanco, the flat, well-maintained roads make this course genuinely fast. Set a power number you intend to hold for two full loops, not one loop's worth of effort.

Cap power in the first 30 minutes. Start fuelling early on the smooth roads.

Máfil region, middle bike

Keep nutrition ahead of fatigue

Passing Máfil around the 37 km mark of each loop and the Pichoy Memorial Bridge near 61 km, use these as checkpoints against your planned power rather than reasons to push.

Check power at each landmark. Stay on the fuelling schedule.

Valdivia region, return to T2

Arrive with a functioning run stride

Repeating the same fast, flat terrain, the second loop is the honest test of whether the first was paced or raced. Hold the same number to the line.

Compare effort to loop one. Finish nutrition before T2.

Valdivia centre, first marathon kilometres

Make the start easier than it looks

Leaving Saval Park on Isla Teja and crossing the Cau-Cau, Calle-Calle and Pedro de Valdivia bridges, the temptation is to carry bike speed into the run. Don't.

Shorten stride out of T2. Hold opening pace regardless of how fresh the legs feel.

Historic Valdivia, marathon middle

Keep moving between planned fuel stops

The repeated Costanera-to-Avenida-España loop, surrounded by crowds, gives a clear read on pacing. Compare each loop to the last rather than to how it feels in the moment.

Compare each loop's pace. Keep taking aid on schedule.

Valdivia city, closing marathon

Use attention and form before chasing a final pace

The third and final loop is where a cold swim respected and a flat bike paced rather than raced pays off, finishing through Valdivia's crowds.

Decide the finish honestly. Run the last loop on effort, not memory of pace.

What to check in race week

Verify the final 29 November 2026 full-distance schedule, since an older municipal account inconsistently mentions 26 November. Obtain the 3.8 km river swim plan and 180 km bike and marathon maps separately from the Valdivia 70.3 course. Confirm regional traffic controls, aid positions and full-distance transition timing.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: long-course fuelling, calm river navigation and a sustainable bike ceiling are rehearsed until the opening marathon kilometres can be deliberately easy.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Valdivia.
