IRONMAN Cozumel.
Your best day in Cozumel.

In Cozumel, an all-day IRONMAN starts in the Caribbean and circles an island where wind and conditions can quietly take more from your bike than the speedometer admits. The marathon will account for every one of those decisions.

What could you race?

I’m Tom, the coach behind Sense Endurance Coaching. Tell me where you are now and I’ll show you what a strong day in Cozumel could look like.

Let’s build your race

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Change units

Three disciplines, one island, no easy way to get energy back.

Cozumel's full-distance race on 22 November begins in Caribbean water before asking for three long laps of island riding. A flat road in tropical heat does not make an easy marathon. Let the wind change your speed, keep fluids and effort under control, and wait for the final 2026 run map before choosing street-by-street targets.

Cozumel Caribbean swim, full start

Begin 3.8 km without forcing the first strokes

Clear water and coral reef views make this one of the sport's more memorable swims, with nothing technical to manage. Settle into rhythm and let the scenery come to you rather than racing it.

Settle by 400 m. Hold a controlled, sustainable effort.

Open Caribbean water, later full swim

Leave the sea with the whole day ahead

Smooth oceanside roads with nothing to check your speed make this course genuinely fast, and genuinely easy to over-ride. Set the power number you can hold for three laps, not the one the road allows for one.

Cap power in the first 30 minutes. Start fuelling and hydrating early in rising heat.

Cozumel island bike, first long section

Set sustainable power while the island feels fast

Repeating the loop past the hotel zone and through a stretch of the city, the flat terrain still offers no natural check on effort. Caribbean heat is the real variable now, not the road.

Recheck power against your plan, not your legs. Stay ahead on fluids and electrolytes.

Cozumel coastal road, bike middle

Keep fuelling through wind changes

The final lap is where an honestly-paced ride pays off on the run to come. Protect that by holding the same number to the line rather than chasing time back.

Finish nutrition before T2. Resist any late push on the flat finish.

Cozumel island ride, later section

Avoid defending speed when the wind turns

The run starts along Cozumel's waterfront walk with nothing in the terrain to slow you down except the heat, which by now has been building for hours. Start conservatively.

Hold opening pace for 5 km. Take aid at every station.

Cozumel full bike return, final stage

Bring enough energy into T2

Passing the main plaza and historic streets gives fixed landmarks to check pace against, on a course with no terrain to do it for you.

Check pace at each landmark. Keep cooling and hydrating on schedule.

Cozumel marathon, opening kilometres

Make your first marathon hour conservative

By this point in a Caribbean afternoon, heat management matters more than any single kilometre split. Ease pace before form breaks down.

Use ice or cold sponges if offered. Reassess goal pace honestly.

Cozumel marathon, closing kilometres

Hold cooling and form until the finish

The finish at City Hall plaza in downtown Cozumel rewards a day paced to the heat, not against it.

Decide the finish honestly. Keep hydrating even in the closing kilometres.

What to check in race week

Plan around the 22 November full distance, not September's Cozumel 70.3. Check the 3.8 km sea swim, 180 km island bike and marathon route, especially the still-unclear run turns. Confirm sea conditions, wind, laps, aid and hydration rules before race week.

Make your finish prediction and I can send this plan to you in race week.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: a full Caribbean swim, measured riding through coastal wind and reliable nutrition are rehearsed to keep the full marathon possible.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Cozumel.
