IRONMAN 70.3 New Zealand.
Race Taupō on your terms.

Lake Taupō rewards a controlled start, but the hills beyond the water won't let you keep the same speed all day. This half-distance race asks for an honest effort over rolling country before a run that looks easier on a course profile than it may feel.

What could you race?

I’m Tom, the coach behind Sense Endurance Coaching. Tell me where you are now and I’ll show you what a strong day in Taupō could look like.

Let’s build your race

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Change units

The ride rolls. Your effort shouldn't have to.

Taupō offers lake swimming followed by rolling countryside and a run that can look deceptively gentle after the bike. Let the rises change your speed without turning them into repeated attacks. The 2027 half-distance route still needs its own map, so keep your effort plan flexible until those roads are confirmed.

Lake Taupō, race swim

Use the lake to find a comfortable stroke

Lake Taupō's calm water rewards an honest, controlled opening.

Seed honestly. Settle into rhythm.

Taupō countryside, first bike section

Hold a ceiling over the rolling rises

The descent to the Aratiatia Dam feels fast and free. Save your legs for the climb back out rather than pushing the downhill.

Cap opening effort. Fuel early.

Taupō countryside, later bike section

Keep the fuelling on schedule when terrain changes

Finish planned nutrition on the return leg along Broadlands and Rifle Range Roads before the lakefront run.

Stay patient. Finish planned nutrition.

Taupō half marathon, opening section

Let bike fatigue settle before choosing pace

Let the first lakefront loop out to 2 Mile Bay feel easy, not fast.

Easy first aid station. Check posture.

Taupō half marathon, final section

Build only when the early run has felt sustainable

Only progress once the first loop has held together.

Stay tall. Choose the last move late.

What to check in race week

Use the 2027 70.3 lake, bike and run maps for swim access, gradients, transitions and aid. The full IRONMAN New Zealand is a different event distance; don't use its longer road layout or pacing landmarks for the half.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: steady lake navigation, controlled riding over hills and a measured half-marathon start are practised as one performance.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Taupō.
