Challenge Canberra.
Your best day in Canberra.

Canberra's 2026 Challenge event looks like a fast race on paper. It is not a standard half-distance race. After a two-kilometre lake swim come 80 kilometres on the bike, including repeated Hindmarsh climbing, and an 18-kilometre run. Those details change the way you pace it.

Let’s build your race

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Four visits to Hindmarsh. One reason to hold back.

An uneven pair of swim circuits at Black Mountain Peninsula leads to four bike laps along Lady Denman Drive and Tuggeranong Parkway. Hindmarsh keeps coming back. Then you run three lakeside circuits. Ride the fourth climb with the same judgement as the first, or the final 18 km will be a very different prospect.

Black Mountain Peninsula, 1.4 km plus 600 m

Settle the first swim loop and keep the second controlled

Protected water off the peninsula gives a controlled, confidence-building start. Settle into rhythm early and use the good sighting lines the foreshore offers.

Settle by 300 m. Sight off the foreshore landmarks.

Lady Denman Drive, early bike lap

Find an effort you can repeat four times

This course is genuinely rolling despite being marketed as smooth and fast. Ride the rolling sections to a power or effort cap rather than assuming the marketing means you can push every rise.

Check effort before average speed. Cap effort on every rise.

Hindmarsh climb and descent, repeated bike section

Keep a ceiling on every climb and descend sensibly

Keep respecting the terrain through the second half. Finish your nutrition and arrive at T2 with legs that respected the climbing, not just the marketing.

Hold the same effort cap throughout. Finish the bottle you planned.

Lake foreshore, first 6 km run

Start below your best 18 km effort

The lakeside pathways give a beautiful, confidence-building run route. Use the first half to convert bike legs into running legs before committing to a real push.

Shorten your stride out of T2. Take the early aid stations deliberately.

Lake foreshore, final run circuits

Hold the second lap steady before choosing a finishing move

The lakeside finish can tempt you to lift the pace early. Earn that final surge by keeping the opening 18 km run effort within reach, then use what is genuinely left in the closing kilometres.

Compare the second half to the first honestly. Keep the finish decision yours.

What to check in race week

Check the Black Mountain Peninsula swim circuit lengths, the four bike loops over Hindmarsh, road-clearance times and the final run aid. Your predictor is built for this 2 km swim, 80 km ride and 18 km run, not a standard half. Recheck the final map for any change before fixing lap targets.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: the repeated Hindmarsh climb and the distinctive 2/80/18 format have been rehearsed together, rather than mistaken for a flat standard half.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Canberra.
