What could you race?

I’m Tom, the coach behind Sense Endurance Coaching. Tell me where you are now and I’ll show you what a strong day in Royal Victoria Dock could look like.

Let’s build your race

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Flat, fast and easy to over-ride.

London offers a calm dock swim, closed-road city laps and a flat run. Fast ground rewards the athlete who holds back early, because three repeated bike laps and four run laps show every mistake in turn.

Lap 1

Settle in the dock before you push.

There are no walls to push off, so find a rhythm you can repeat for two kilometres.

Settle by 300 m. Sight for the turn buoys.

Lap 2

Re-enter and hold the same rhythm.

The Aussie exit is a natural reset. Check effort before you start the second lap.

Reset at the exit. Turn left after lap one.

Lap 1

Ride the first lap below your ceiling.

Landmarks and closed roads tempt a fast opening. Cap early power and fuel from the start.

Cap opening power. Fuel early.

Lap 2

Repeat lap one, not the rider ahead.

The middle lap is where an over-ridden opening starts to show. Match lap one's effort.

Match lap one's effort. Fuel on schedule.

Lap 3

Protect the run.

Keep effort steady and finish your nutrition before T2.

Hold effort steady. Finish nutrition before T2.

Lap 1

Open easy on the flat lap.

A flat course tempts a fast opening. Run the first lap a shade slower than goal pace.

Hold opening pace. Take aid each lap.

Laps 2-3

Use the middle laps as your checkpoint.

Each lap past the same point is an honest read on how the bike went.

Compare each lap. Adjust deliberately.

Lap 4

Race what you saved.

Progress only once form has held across the first three laps.

Check posture. Choose the last move late.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: the athlete can pace three closed-road city laps by effort and keep four flat run laps honest.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Royal Victoria Dock.
