IRONMAN Oman.
Your best day in Muscat.

Muscat starts you in the sea off Qurum Beach, sends you through Muttrah and out towards Barka for 180 kilometres, then brings you back for a marathon along the coast. It is a long, attractive course with enough heat and changing road to punish an impatient first half.

What could you race?

I’m Tom, the coach behind Sense Endurance Coaching. Tell me where you are now and I’ll show you what a strong day in Muscat could look like.

Let’s build your race

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Change units

Muscat gets a full IRONMAN. You need a full-day plan.

Qurum Beach offers the opening before the bike carries you through Muttrah towards Barka and back. A fast, flat-looking city marathon follows. There is plenty to admire here, but the important judgement is how much power to spend before the heat and the run have their say.

Qurum Beach, 3.8 km sea swim

Begin the 3.8 km without chasing a short-course pack

Qurum's open-water start is the beginning of a very long day. Follow the final buoys, settle your breathing and resist racing for position before the full course has even begun.

Settle by 400 m. Hold a controlled, repeatable effort.

Muscat full swim, later section

Exit the sea feeling ready for hours on the bike

Through Muttrah's historic streets and on towards Barka, hold a sustainable power ceiling even when the coastal views and fresh legs encourage an early surge.

Cap power on every roll. Fuel early while conditions are coolest.

Through Muttrah towards Barka

Put a conservative cap on power immediately

Barka marks the far end of the long out-and-back. On the return, hold effort rather than attempting to match an outward speed the wind may have favoured.

Reassess at the turnaround. Stay on the fuelling schedule.

Muscat to Barka, outward bike

Keep fuelling regular rather than waiting for fatigue

The return leg repeats the same rolling terrain in building heat. Protect the run by holding your number rather than chasing time back.

Finish nutrition before T2. Recheck power against the heat, not just the terrain.

Barka turnaround and return

Respect possible rollers without inventing a gradient map

A marathon through Muscat can look deceptively quick, but December conditions will decide how hard it feels. Start below goal pace and use early aid to make cooling and fuelling deliberate.

Hold opening pace for 5 km. Take aid at every station from the start.

Return through Muscat to T2

Prepare a marathon effort, not a final bike surge

Passing more of the city's landmarks and coastal views, reassess pace against how the heat actually feels, not against the course's reputation for speed.

Reassess goal pace against the heat. Cool at every opportunity.

Muscat full marathon, opening stage

Start with a pace you can own for hours

This is where a fast course and rising Gulf heat combine to punish an early pacing mistake. Manage the effort you actually have.

Use ice or cold sponges if offered. Keep drinking on schedule.

Muscat full marathon, closing stage

Manage effort and aid to the end

The closing kilometres reward a day paced to the Gulf heat rather than against it, on a course fast enough to make that pay off.

Decide the finish honestly. Keep cooling even in the final kilometres.

What to check in race week

Check the inaugural full-distance swim entry at Qurum Beach, 180 km bike roads, marathon turns, aid and cutoffs before travelling. February's Muscat 70.3 uses a different format; none of its swim, lap or transition details should stand in for the full-distance route.

Make your finish prediction and I can send this plan to you in race week.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: long-course sea swimming, a genuinely sustainable 180 km power ceiling and the first hour of a patient marathon are rehearsed as a single event.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Muscat.
