IRONMAN 70.3 San Juan.
Your best day in San Juan.

San Juan offers something many city races cannot: a reservoir start beneath mountain scenery and a long ride that, in the last documented edition, brought athletes back into town. It is exactly the kind of race where the bike can absorb more effort than you notice.

What could you race?

I’m Tom, the coach behind Sense Endurance Coaching. Tell me where you are now and I’ll show you what a strong day in San Juan could look like.

Let’s build your race

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Change units

From Punta Negra to San Juan, do not chase the road.

Dique Punta Negra gave the 2026 swim a mountain backdrop before a point-to-point ride through Las Moras and Ullúm brought athletes into San Juan. The finish then waited near Plaza del Bicentenario. That is the character worth preparing for, but the 11 April 2027 race needs its own confirmed roads and transitions.

Dique Punta Negra, previous lake start

Swim steadily without rushing the first turn

At Dique Punta Negra, let the reservoir swim become steady before thinking about split time. The mountains are the setting; the buoy line is your job.

Sight the actual buoys. Swim the marked line.

San Juan bike route, previous edition

Hold a steady bike effort while the route is provisional

The 2026 route headed from Punta Negra towards San Juan, but the exact 2027 terrain is unconfirmed. Keep your opening bike effort steady rather than anticipating hills or an easy return.

Cap early bike effort. Do not chase early speed.

Towards central San Juan, prior bike approach

Keep fuelling without chasing a fast split

As the earlier route approached central San Juan, keep eating and drinking. A quick-looking return does not repay the energy spent on the roads out of the reservoir.

Fuel ahead of T2. Arrive ready to run.

San Juan centre, previous-edition run

Start the first urban kilometres well within yourself

On the former downtown run, give yourself time to adjust to running after the bike. The Plaza del Bicentenario finish can wait.

Ease into the run. Let cadence settle.

Plaza del Bicentenario, previous-edition finish

Keep the final effort under your control

Near the old city-centre finish, lift only after the opening half has stayed even. Finish the race you prepared for, not the one the first kilometres tempted you to run.

Keep your run form. Race after halfway.

What to check in race week

Obtain the labelled 2027 route maps and final start-time bulletin. Verify whether Dique Punta Negra remains the swim start, whether the bike is still point-to-point via Las Moras and Ullúm, and where separate transitions occur. The 2026 three-circuit city run is not proof of 2027 lap counts. Check reservoir conditions, wind and aid points.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: lake navigation, sustainable climbing effort and a restrained city-run opening work together rather than competing for separate split records.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to San Juan.
