IRONMAN 70.3 Ruidoso New Mexico.
Race Ruidoso on your terms.

At Ruidoso, altitude is not just a number on the map. You swim at a mountain lake, ride exposed roads above the lowlands and return to village streets where the same pace can feel very different from home.

What could you race?

I’m Tom, the coach behind Sense Endurance Coaching. Tell me where you are now and I’ll show you what a strong day in Ruidoso could look like.

Let’s build your race

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Change units

The thin air sets the terms. Don't argue with it on the bike.

Grindstone Lake sets the opening rhythm before the road rises towards Hondo and the run winds through Ruidoso. Altitude turns every impatient surge into a bigger debt. These course details come from the inaugural 2026 edition; check the 2027 layout before building your plan around a particular road.

Grindstone Lake, prior swim venue

Take time to find breathing rhythm at altitude

Clear, cool water in one of Ruidoso's most scenic settings gives a straightforward opening. Settle into rhythm before the bike's real demands begin.

Settle by 300 m. Hold a controlled, repeatable effort.

Ruidoso lake exit and transition, provisional

Leave the water without chasing a flatland split

Leaving Grindstone Lake through town onto the highway, this is where you set the tone for the climbs ahead. At real mountain altitude, an effort that feels sustainable can cost more than usual.

Cap power on the early rollers. Fuel before the climbing starts.

Ruidoso mountain roads, early cycling

Cap effort on rising roads

The climbs towards Hondo tempt you to follow the riders around you. Hold your own power ceiling instead, especially at altitude.

Hold your power number on every climb. Fuel and hydrate through the climbing, not after it.

Ruidoso mountain roads, first longer block

Keep fuelling when climbing feels expensive

Returning from Hondo back into town, hold your discipline through the closing kilometres rather than chasing back time spent on the climbs.

Finish nutrition before T2. Stay smooth into the dismount.

Ruidoso bike return, second longer block

Avoid chasing speed on the exposed road

Leaving White Mountain Sports Complex into Ruidoso's mountain villages and neighbourhoods, this is where the cumulative cost of the Hondo climbs and the altitude first shows up. Start controlled.

Shorten stride out of T2. Hold effort, not pace, on any rise.

Ruidoso transition, approach to town

Leave something for the mountain-village run

Rolling terrain through the neighbourhoods, with local wildlife along the route, gives a genuine read on how the bike's climbing has left your legs.

Reassess pace against effort. Keep taking aid on schedule.

Ruidoso village streets, opening run

Let your stride settle above the lowlands

This is where a genuinely demanding bike course, ridden at real mountain altitude, asks the most of the run. Manage the effort you actually have.

Reassess goal pace honestly. Keep hydrating on schedule.

Ruidoso finish, new map pending

Only raise the effort when breathing remains controlled

The finish in the heart of Midtown Ruidoso rewards a bike that respected the Hondo climbs and a run paced to real mountain conditions.

Decide the finish honestly. Run the last kilometres on effort, not memory of pace.

What to check in race week

Before travelling, check the 2027 swim entry, bike and run routes, transitions and local road closures. Plan how you will acclimatise, lower your effort expectations at altitude and carry fluid between aid stations.

Make your finish prediction and I can send this plan to you in race week.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: the athlete can judge high-altitude swimming and riding by sustainable effort, not lowland splits, and begin the village run patiently.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Ruidoso.
