The arched Jefferson Street Bridge over the Rock River in Rockford.

IRONMAN 70.3 Rockford-Illinois.
Race Rockford on your terms.

Rockford's river moves faster than your swim stroke can account for. A downstream start can give you an encouraging split, but the rolling roads towards Rockton still have to be ridden on your own strength.

What could you race?

I’m Tom, the coach behind Sense Endurance Coaching. Tell me where you are now and I’ll show you what a strong day in Rockford could look like.

Let’s build your race

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Change units

Let the Rock River carry the split, not your ambition.

In the earlier layout, the Rock River gives you a downstream swim before one rolling bike circuit through Rockton and two run loops beside the water. A fast river split doesn't mean your legs can climb harder. Keep the effort even and let the riverbank finish be the reward. The final 2027 map is not yet fixed.

Rock Guardians, opening river swim

Find your own stroke and allow for the downstream flow

The Rock River carries you downriver toward transition. Settle into rhythm rather than fighting it.

Seed honestly. Settle into rhythm.

Rockford to Rockton, outward bike

Set a sustainable ceiling over the rural rollers

Gently rolling farmland invites surging on every small rise. Hold one steady power number instead.

Hold a steady number. Fuel early.

Rockton return, final cycling sector

Keep fuelling rather than defending a river-fast split

Finish your nutrition and hold effort through the remaining rolling terrain before the two-lap run.

Stay patient. Finish planned nutrition.

Rock River banks, first run circuit

Make the opening riverside kilometres comfortable

Let the first lap along the Rock River feel easy, not fast.

Easy first aid station. Check posture.

North Main Street finish, second run circuit

Use the stronger effort only after the first lap holds

Only progress once the first lap has held together.

Stay tall. Choose the last move late.

What to check in race week

Confirm the June 2027 date and the current Rock Guardians swim entry, South Wyman exit, Rockton bike circuit and two riverbank run laps. Older route descriptions mix event years; the new edition needs its own map. Check river flow, traffic, aid and transition before setting split landmarks.

Make your finish prediction and I can send this plan to you in race week.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: the downstream river swim is treated as a bonus to time rather than an excuse for a harder rural bike, and the athlete begins a repeated riverfront run under control.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Rockford.
