Willamette River, historic swim course
Use the current without fighting to hold a target speed
The Willamette's current carries you toward transition. Settle into rhythm rather than fighting it.
Seed honestly. Settle into rhythm.
Your day in Salem
I’m Tom, the coach behind Sense Endurance Coaching. Tell me where you are now and I’ll show you what a strong day in Salem could look like.
The course behind your race
On the earlier Salem course, the Willamette carries you downstream before you ride through wine country and run on shaded park paths. The river's help is welcome, but it cannot make the bike easier on your legs. Set your effort for the full day, not for a swim split that flatters you.

Oregon wine-country bike, earlier roads
With few hills to force pacing discipline, it's easy to override on this fast, flat course. Hold your number regardless of how easy it feels.
Cap opening effort. Fuel early.
Oregon wine country, later bike stage
Finish planned nutrition and hold effort through the remaining flat miles before the run.
Stay patient. Finish planned nutrition.
Salem park paths, opening run
Let the nature-preserve opening feel easy, not fast.
Easy first aid station. Check posture.
Salem shaded paths, finishing run
Only progress once the first half has held together.
Stay tall. Choose the last move late.

Prepare for Salem
A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: swimming in moving freshwater and riding by controlled power leave enough energy for a calm, consistent park-path half marathon.
I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Salem.
